Saturday Maths classes to prepare Grade 7 learners will commence on Saturday 14th June 2014. Mr Tyrone Joubert, a CA with Investec, has been involved with Sullivan Primary for the last 5 years. Tyrone not only volunteers his services to run interactive Maths classes for Grade 7 learners from 09h30 – 11h00 every Saturday from June to December, but he also provides a bursary towards the high school fees for the top maths student every year.

CAPS : CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT POLICY STATEMENT

The new curriculum started in the Foundation Phase in 2012, was extended to grades 4 – 6 in 2013 and is now in to Grade 7 in 2014. CAPS aims to improve Literacy and Numeracy so that learners can spend more time with READING, NUMERACY and WRITING TASKS. CAPS is therefore designed to ensure that learners: 1. Read every day; 2. Write every day; 3. Calculate every day; 4. Comprehend (understand) and reason every day.

In Grades 1 – 3 there are 4 subjects: English Home Language (HL); Afrikaans First Additional Language (FAL); Mathematics and Life Skills.

In Grades 4 – 6 there are 6 subjects: English (HL); Afrikaans (FAL); Mathematics; Natural Science & Technology; Social Sciences; Life Skills. Music, Creative Art and Physical Education are compulsory components of Life Skills. In Grade 7 there are 9 subjects: English (HL); Afrikaans (FAL); Mathematics; Natural Science; Technology; Social Sciences; Economic Management Sciences; Arts & Culture and Life Skills. All learners from Grade R – 7 are assessed according to a 7- point coding system:

  • 7 = Outstanding (80 – 100%)
  • 6 = Meritorious (70 – 79%)
  • 5 = Substantial (60 – 69%)
  • 4 = Adequate (50 – 59%)
  • 3 = Moderate (40 – 49%)
  • 2 = Elementary (30 – 39%)1 = Not achieved (0 – 29%)

MINIMUM PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADES 7-9

Home Language Level 4 (50-59%)

AND

First Additional Language Level 3 (40-49%)

AND

Mathematics Level 3 (40-49%)

AND

Any 3 (three) other subjects Level 3 (40-49%)

AND

Any 2 (two) other subjects Level 2 (30-39%)
