The Grade 6 TEKIOO programme has also commenced. 12 Grade 6 learners have been selected to participate in the Science & Technology practical course presented by Mr Russell Brown, a past pupil of Sullivan Primary. This hands-on course focuses on a combination of Science and Technology skills which learners care taught and then have to apply practically to complete two projects by the end of the twelve month programme. The programme, which runs from April 2014 to March 2015, has been sponsored for these 12 learners from our school by the NUSSBAUM FOUNDATION.

CAPS – CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT POLICY STATEMENT

The new curriculum was extended to grades 4 – 6 (Intermediate phase) in 2013. The implementation of CAPS is to improve Literacy and Numeracy because research has shown that learners do not spend enough time with READING, NUMERACY and WRITING TASKS. The new curriculum (CAPS) is therefore designed to ensure that learners: 1. Read every day; 2. Write every day; 3. Calculate every day; 4. Comprehend (understand) and reason every day.

As from last year , learners in Grade 1 have been required to learn an Additional Language and be assessed in this language. In our school the Home Language (HL) will be English and the First Additional Language (FAL) will be Afrikaans for all learners from Grade 1 to 6. The following subjects will now be taught from grade 4 – 6: English (HL); Afrikaans (FAL); Mathematics; Natural Science & Technology; Social Sciences and Life Skills. Music, Creative Art and Physical Education are compulsory components of Life Skills. All learners from Grade R – 7 will now also be assessed according to a 7- point coding system

  • 7 = Outstanding (80 – 100%)
  • 6 = Meritorius (70 – 79%)
  • 5 = Substantial (60 – 69%)
  • 4 = Adequate (50 – 59%)
  • 3 = Moderate (40 – 49%)
  • 2 = Elementary (30 – 39%)
